DJ SIR SCRATCH
“Home is where the future is.” This is how Jonathan Alca aka DJ SIR SCRATCH
traced and describes his humble beginnings that transcended him to the top of
the DJ ladder.
As he fondly recalls, he together with his elder brother, James used to play on
the cassette with a two-piece tape deck. As he alternately play-stops the tapes,
he creates sound, not knowing that he is actually doing the art of segue-mixing
and scratching and sometimes putting a song in its extended version through his
personal editing.
His creativity did not stop from there, as they managed to purchase a
second-hand house-model turntable (with no pitch control, mind yah??!).
How time flies…. Their family decided to put up a disco mobile aptly called
JUDGE & MARTIAL. They roamed around servicing debuts, parties and some corporate
functions in various hotels. They even had the chance to collaborate with some
FM Radio Stations like MAGIC 89.9, RX 93.1 and the now defunct 89.1 DMZ Mobile
Circuit. DJ SIR SCRATCH goes on air, doing his vinyl tricks and music mixing.
Their disco mobile was the very first in introducing 3-turntable set-up during
events.
DJ SIR SCRATCH is happy to have achieved all these in a very brief period, yet,
he doesn’t want to rest on his couch. Not yet. His dreams have become bigger,
larger than life.
CLUB RESIDENCIES:
SPIRITS – Baguio City
EQUINOX Disco – Makati City
DANZ CAFÉ – Quezon City
HEARTBEAT MEGADISCO – Quezon City
1996 KISS CLUB – Hotel Riviera, South Korea
1998 ZESTY DANCE BAR – Sheraton Hotel, South Korea
2000 Swiss Grand Hotel, South Korea
2002 MAZZO Dance Bar – Libis, Quezon City
But life is not as simple as DJ SIR SCRATCH thought it is. There are many things
that come along way that will make us re-assess ourselves. We know what we want
to achieve, we are focused, but other opportunities come along the way that we
can’t pass up.
One of these is the chance to compete in a national championships of DJs
organized by the local franchise of world renowned DISCO MIX CLUB of UK. In
1993, he was part of a team who competed in the event. They ranked a measly
sixth, but that doesn’t discouraged him from rejoining again.
In 1999, after his club stint in South Korea. DJ SIR SCRATCH did a month long
practice in time for the DMC competition, as he is very much determined to win
the top prize and the privilege to travel to London. And the rest is history, DJ
SIR SCRATCH successfully won the 1999 and 2000 DMC Philippine DJ Championships
that earned him the No.5 spot in the World DJ Finals.
This year, DJ SIR SCRATCH continues to rule the competition as he was recently
adjudged as the DMC DJ Champion for 2002. As part of his commitment, he now
promotes his music and vinyl scratching techniques while doing shows and big
events for DMC. They’ve been on tour since the second quarter conquering key
cities through out the country.
“A good DJ is the ruler of the crowd, a pilot of the plane. If you go on a wrong
direction, people will dump you out”.
